Cannibalism on Polar Bear is increased

In addition to prey on seals, polar bears are also occasionally prey species or their own children. The behavior was not encountered before. However, based on the latest reports Jenny Ross, a photographer, in the journal Arctic this month, the behavior is more often encountered.

Why? Ross explained that during the polar climate warms, some melting ice in the Svalbard archipelago and broken. For polar bears, as it is now difficult because it is difficult for them to hunt seals.

"So, then, the young polar bear is a possible food source for adult polar bear. As the climate continues to warm in the Arctic and the ice melts earlier in the summer, the frequency of predation in one species increases," explained Ross as quoted by the Daily Mail, Thursday (08/12/2011).

Ross added that the polar bear began to look for other food alternatives. "On land, polar bears find garbage and human food. They also began eating seabirds and their eggs. None of the alternatives that could support them," he said.

One moment of a polar bear mother who takes her son immortalized Ross while on an expedition to the archipelago of Svalbard. He saw how the mother polar bear biting puppies with teeth and jaw strength, threw him to the surface of the ice and eventually eat it.

While there are many conditions that accelerate the melting of ice at the poles, such as climate change, polar bears become seriously threatened. Now not just about their adaptability at higher temperatures, but a matter of spurring food crisis cannibalism and could lead to extinction. There should be measures to overcome them.
